I'm a recovering Coke addict

eating
The more I've learned about food and nutrition, the more I've tried to better my diet. But even when I'm eating an otherwise exclusively healthy diet, I always started my morning with a Diet Coke. Everyone's got to have a guilty pleasure, right?

I don't know exactly when or how it started, but for as long as I can remember, probably for at least 15 years, I've drank two Diet Cokes every morning. A couple of years ago I cut down from two cans to one a day, and just left it at that. And when they came out with the Black Cherry Vanilla flavour it became my new favourite, and I've been drinking that for the past many months. Recently I've been increasingly less happy about "having" to have a D.C. in the A.M., but always rationalized it (I'm good at rationalizing things to my benefit) as being so much better than the coffee obsessions/addictions of others.

About a week ago I was running low and went to the store to get more soda. Much to my chagrin, the shelves contained no Black Cherry Vanilla Diet Coke. I went to another store, and they were out as well. A peek at the D.C. website reveals that there are currently six flavours, and B.C.V. is not listed as one! Oh dear, my favourite drink has been discontinued!

Well, I will use this as my reason/excuse/sign from the deities that I no longer need to drink soda in the morning. If I can't have the flavour I really like, I'll just stop buying it altogether. It's been a few days now and I miss the taste of it just a little bit, but it's not so bad. I think I'll live.

What's so much better about having one diet soda in the AM instead of one cup of coffee?

curious...

Nothing, really. Other than the convenience of being able to easily carry around a can wherever you go.

I never said my rationalizations were rational ;)

I think you're old enough to remember this stuff. Oh how I loved it.

Oh wow, heh, I do remember it!

Why is it the good things never last?

And the Cactus Cooler these days doesn't taste like it did in the '70s.

What?! From all accounts, coffee is much better for you than soda!
What about tea?
Hell, even NoDoz is a healthier caffeine delivery option to soda.

Well, the soda was better only because I like DC more than I like coffee. I never actually said it was better (or good) for me!

This is so timely! I've been thinking of quitting as well. I also have the morning DC instead of coffee. I've also used the excuse that because it has less caffeine than coffee that I'm doing better than most folks, hell I went even further to feel morally superior because I didn't feel I absolutely had to have it, it wasn't an addiction. How wrong I was to find myself having withdrawal headaches during camping last weekend! I love the tingly carbonation sensation, but I'm addicted to the caffeine and sodium. Tea doesn't even seem an appealing substitute. Please report back again as to how it's going.

It's actually going pretty well. I guess I lucked out because I don't have the caffeine addiction, so that made it much easier. I've just been drinking water in the morning because hot drinks just don't sound appealing, especially when I'm trying to wake up.

Dear author
Please consider changing the title of your article. Claiming to be an actual "Coke addict" is something less amusing to those who are in the stages of recovery/seeking alternatives to this substance. Doing such, and finding the addiction to coke, appropriate to be used as a pun, hardly compares to the every day struggle that I, and others like me, fight EVERY SINGLE DAY of our lives. I don't mean to impose my beliefs on another's forum, or to discourage anyone from using their freedom of speech; but please know that your misleading title has left discouraged, and broken hearts in the path of those seeking help.

Yours Truly,
A Recovering Coke Addict
